Most people have mixed up ideas about ‘getting traffic to my site’. Really what does that even mean? Subscribing to your RSS feed? Who cares about what you are posting anyways?

Sounds harsh, but the reality is that those are the exact questions that you need to ask yourself when you are looking at increasing traffic. What is your ultimate goal to more people coming to your website? Do you want to capture them as a client? Sell them a product? Sign up for your newsletter or RSS feed? Well you need to consider the audience you are reaching out too and the HOW you will make them do this.

First, you need to target an audience. Many people say, and in fact until I wrote a business plan for my company years ago I said this also, that everyone is my target audience. Well that is not good enough, you need to narrow that down dramatically. Start with one audience then move to another and another. Starting small and simple and building from there makes good sense, and good business practice.

Example: If you own a custom detailing car shop, and you want to drive more traffic, consider competitors or better yet other related industries like Stereo Systems, Seat Covers or Window Tinting. Realistically those who like to ‘pimp their ride’ would be up for recommendations or they are not even thinking about your product however will once they see it advertized.

Second now you need to find your audience. This is tricky because you may not know how or who they are. This is when you contract a professional, like me, who knows how to find people related around what you do or how it ties into other areas. I use search in a variety of places online, and backtrack people through their habits so I can find patterns and ultimately get your brand to them.

Being consistent about finding people is keep, being consistent on advertizing and how you change up details is key as well. But before you spend any money on the actual guts of a campaign, spend some money and time catering ideas to an audience who is already looking for information. Your success will much greater for sure.
