Time Management: When is Enough…Enough?
Wednesday, December 9, 2009 10:19As a woman and first an entrepreneur running my own business(s) I’m always looking at any opportunities that at times I tend to stretch myself thin sometimes in time. I’m called a ‘work-a-holic’ by about everyone I know who is not into the kind of sales or business development like me, but really I am an ‘opportunist’. I build on many opportunities for the chance that one or a few will actually happen, because the reality is that sometimes none will work out.
When, in terms of opportunities and building up a breadth of them is enough really enough?
Honestly I don’t have an answer for that because I rarely say NO or think that something is not aligned in my overall strategy. Maybe it is also a female personality where I make sense of what I want and twist it to work best for me. Regardless one thing that I know is that you can’t possibly have your hands in everything so I keep trying too.
Time management is what will enable you to do what you want to do, it is just important to prioritize.
Rule #1: Must Do’s Must Get DONE - This can be anything, but my take is a MUST DO is something that keeps me alive. For me that is sales and project management. I have to sell, I have to manage what I have sold and the project must be done so I can deliver to the client then invoice for payment. If not I will not survive. A MUST DO.
*This allows me to build more relationships, bring more people into projects, do business and ultimately stay in business.
Rule #2: Make LIFE a Priority – If you don’t make sure that your life, the people in it, vacations and general FUN is not a priority then your going to fail in both life and business. There is no way around this. I love snowboarding, shopping, cooking, being with my family, watching movies with my husband, cutting the lawn, learning new sports, hanging with friends and going to the cabin. These are all priorities to me and I will say no yo work or put it off to do any of those….period!
Rule #3: New Opportunities Require Research – Before I jump on anything I research. This being both on my own and with other people. You can’t do anything without research, and if you have no time for the research then you have no time for the opportunity. Can’t fit this in, heck good luck with the new opp!
Rule #4: Don’t let ANYONE Talk You IN or OUT of Anything - I have had and still have skeptics. Some are jealous because they wish they could leave their cushy jobs and work with only passion, others don’t understand and many just are not into what I do for a living. Bottom line is if your not into MANY opportunities being client and project based as well as new business and other things you also won’t survive. How many SANE successful business people running their own business making millions never work or invest? NONE!
Wait, the question is When is Enough….Enough? It never is baby, now get back to work!
