Winnipeg Girl Geek Dinners Kickoff Event February 9, 2010
Thursday, January 14, 2010 8:49Join us downtown at EAT! Bistro in Aqua Books to talk about technology at our first-ever Winnipeg Girl Geek Dinner. We will meet in the restaurant, enjoy some great food and drinks (pay for your own), and then move upstairs to a comfy sitting area. From there, we’ll talk about what the group is about, desired meeting format, future topics, and speakers.
The goal of these events is to build a community for Girl Geeks (and their invited male friends) to get together, learn and talk about technology. All levels of expertise and age groups are welcome, and we hope to see representatives from many areas such as math and science, new media, graphic design, dev, tech, and more.
This Month’s Topic: How to Make Money in Digital Media
Coree Francisco from Girlone Interative will be sharing how you can sell technology and digital media together to form the client’s best friend and put your best foot forward. She’ll describe what tools you need to develop to help you get where you want to be, and how to create your own development team in a cost-effective manner to make the most of your sale.
Coree Francisco’s Bio
As one of the very few female digital media entrepreneurs in Canada, Coree Francisco has volunteered extensively within the digital media sector through industry associations, educational facilities, industry groups and government agencies. Coree helped pioneer the digital media industry in Manitoba by being a board member, mentor and teacher with New Media Manitoba, MIDMA, Girls in Gaming, Red River College, Assiniboine Community College, Information Communications Technologies Association of Manitoba, Junior Achievement, Tec-Voc and DMCI.
Owner of 2 companies, Girlone Interactive, the main digital agency Coree represents herself as, andLIV Interactive, a digital media-marketing platform for professionals and companies; Coree currently sits as the Chair of the Interactive Advisory Board for New Media Manitoba. She was awarded 2009 Manitoba Woman Entrepreneur of the year award for her contribution to the community coming and as one of the ‘Top 10 Young Canadian Entrepreneurs’ receiving an inclusive invite to a cultural forum Paris, France in 2004 representing Manitoba and Canadian young entrepreneurs.
Guy geeks are welcome to attend as well, but the rule of thumb is to be invited by a girl attending. At many technical conventions, guys outnumber girls by about 10 to 1. Using this guideline ensures that at most the ratio will be 1 to 1.
