Optimize Headlines to be Ridiculously Compelling
Tuesday, November 24, 2009 10:35Are your headlines good enough to grab the attention of someone who skims over a list and have them click on it to read what it’s about?
This subject is relevant for everyone from a journalist working for a newspaper, to a blogger writing an entry or a Tweeter tweeting their peeps. If your headlines are not strong enough, they will not get noticed and your content will not get read. Aren’t you spending time writing so that it will all be read, if so this is the doorway that everyone will need to pass through and if it’s not pretty enough, no one will even come knocking.
So how do you create a headline that will get people to open the door? Well, how about I give you a tool that will help you every time you create a new headline? There is an application that you can input your headline into and it will grade its effectiveness on a percentage and couple that with a reason for its strength. I find this tool to be a good gauge of the effectiveness of your headline but it doesn’t give you ways to improve it. I’ll give you 3!
- Keep it shorter in length so it’s easy to digest
- Use powerful descriptive words that take a risk with the headline. The headline of this entry for example uses the word ridiculously. That word alone is enough to ensure it stands out.
- State what they will get when reading the headline. Even I am guilty of neglecting this point sometimes and the headlines I don’t optimize I notice receive significantly lower hits than those that I do optimize.
Try out the Emotional Marketing Value Headline Analyzer and use it as a tool that will help improve the quality of your headline. Click here to use the analyzer.
